4 Tips to Go Plant-Based in 2024

So you have decided to go Plant Based this year. Now what? How do you get started?

Here are some of my thoughts and recommendations on just how to go about doing that.

First of all, I will tell you that I am not a doctor, nor a nutritionist. I am merely sharing from my own experience of being plant based for almost 10 years now. My husband, two daughters and I decided to go Plant Based after reading the book Eat to Live by Dr Joel Fuhrman. The book had been recommended to us by a friend of my husbands after he had expressed his concerns about our current state of health. Jeff had become pre-diabetic, I had started having regular heart palpitations and frequent migraines and we both were a bit overweight and just not feeling very well for being almost 40 years old.

We followed the book suggestions 100%. That is just the way we are. No testing the waters by just sticking our toes in, we jumped in whole body telling our teenage daughters that it was up to them if they wanted to join us. Luckily they did because it made cooking and eating in our household much easier for me.

I think it was easier for us to jump in 100% from the beginning because we weren’t constantly being tempted by unhealthy foods which would lead us back to the slippery slope of going back to the SAD American diet but that is completely up to you and how you want to go about it according to your own personality and lifestyle.

Once you get started you will begin to feel the positive effects almost immediately and it will be difficult to control your excitement and want to share it with everyone. Just a warning about doing this, coming from many years of experience and hearing other people’s experiences about sharing their excitement and experiences too early. The transformation happens so quickly and easily that you will want to yell it from the rooftops.  Enjoy the benefits of this choice and start educating yourself about the Plant Based lifestyle before talking to people about it and trying to convince them to join you. People will naturally see the changes in you and ask what you are doing to look so good. By then you will have read and/or watched some documentaries, so you will understand the choice you made a bit better and feel more confident about it so you can have stronger conversations about what you are doing. People are so skeptical about diet changes or challenges to their own ways of eating that it ends up causing a very defensive back and forth conversation leaving you disheartened and maybe even confused about your choice if you do it too early.

The next suggestion to ensure your success is to find replacement recipes for your favorite meals and start trying them out until you find one that works for you. This will help you to not be tempted by your old food habits. We have you covered there. We have tried to cover most of the popular foods and desserts that people are used to eating making healthier versions of them for you to enjoy and they are all free and printable from our website.

Next I would suggest finding a Plant Based group of some kind either online or in person so that you can discuss this topic with other like minded people. This will help you learn more effective ways to communicate what you are doing with your friends and family.

Lastly I would say to be kind to yourself. Don’t fret if you can’t do a plant based meal for one of your meals or even a day or two. Every time you eat it is another chance to start again. Going Plant Based is a process and sometimes takes a while to fully adhere to it. The more you do it the easier it will get and soon it will feel like second nature.
