Dog for Adoption

Seeking Loving Home for Our Beloved Friend

Introducing: River the Wonder Dog

We rescued River as a puppy and later learned she is a mix of a Carolina Dog and something else. The Carolina Dog genetics must be pretty strong because we had someone approach us at the park to tell us how special it is to have one of these dogs and that she carries all the markings, coloring, curled tail, etc. She was named after the character River in a sci-fi show called Firefly. She is 8 years old, vaccinated, chipped, and very healthy.

River is extremely fastidious and self grooming like a cat but she does shed regularly. She is an inside dog but will happily hang out in a fenced yard for a hour or so at a time in nice weather. She does need a fenced yard because she will chase squirrels and rabbits (she will kill these little creatures if she catches them) and follow her nose given the chance. She has lived her entire life with us working from home with her every day so she is very used to being with people throughout the day and we want to place her with someone that wonโ€™t leave her alone all day. She is completely house broken, doesnโ€™t chew stuff, and will clearly let you know when she wants to go outside. We initially trained her to ring a bell and push a talking button to go outside but ended up not using these anymore because she makes it clear she wants to go out in her own way. She is leash trained but tends to pull when catching the scent of something or passing another dog and can get quite hyper in these instances. We walk her 3-4 miles every day and feel she needs this amount of exercise so we want to place her with a family that loves walking or running everyday.

River absolutely loves children and is extremely gentle even with very young children. She gets excited anytime she hears childrenโ€™s voices and our neighborhood kids come over just to play with her in our back yard. She has been raised on vegan dog food called V-Dog so we want to place her with someone who will continue to feed her this way. For snacks she loves tofu chunks, popcorn, walnuts, sweet potatoes, and she will catch any of these from about 4 feet away if you toss them to her. She gets a teaspoon of unsweetened peanut butter every morning that we hold while she licks the spoon clean and if she doesnโ€™t get this she becomes very moody. She has never had any health issues other than having a bunch of her teeth pulled which the vet said was not uncommon for dogs with some wild breeding in them. She is lean and extremely fit, absolutely loves to play fetch, and will happily walk 3-5 miles a day. She understands commands for heel, sit, lay down, speak (she will bark), whisper (she will bark very softly), and shake. She will follow a few of these commands from visual hand cues as well.

River is a gentle being with an intensity of presence that is remarkable. She will sit and stare into your soul when you pet her or sit and stare into her own eyes in a mirror is there is one at eye level. She tilts her head back and forth like she is trying to understand every word when you talk to her and displays an astonishing level of understanding when telling her to do things.

We are heart broken to have to find River a new home but we are moving over seas and cannot take her with us. We must find her a loving home (ideally with children) where someone is home with her during the day and that loves to walk or run regularly. If this sounds like you, please contact us for more information and to arrange an interview.
